Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 42 kindergarten students are learning both Spanish and English in a dual immersion program. Most of my students come from low income families and qualify for free/reduced lunch. All of my students are learning a second language in our dual immersion program at a public school. Students in my class are expected to master all of the state standards in Spanish and English. My hard working students are learning to become bilingual. Part of this process involves learning the pacing, intonation and expression of the Spanish language. For me it has been absolutely incredible to see and hear my students start to use the Spanish that they have learned since September. Most of the Spanish that they have acquired is from listening to people speak in Spanish. My kindergarten students have brains like sponges and they are soaking up all of the knowledge around them. Their vocabulary is increasing everyday just from being in a Spanish environment and they love it! Right now my headphones, CD’s and cassettes are sitting on my circle table unused. A cassette and CD player will transform my circle table to a place rich with vocabulary and knowledge. Listening to stories will help students follow directions and become active listeners. As they listen to different stories and songs every week they will learn the cadence of the language, develop their vocabulary, understand text, and hear the pacing, intonation, and expression of the Spanish language. You have the opportunity to create a delightful center in my classroom where students are able to explore the world by listening to stories on their new cassette and CD player. Imagine putting on headphones and transporting yourself into a magical world where books can be read, heard and experienced. Right now, you can help students love literature by making their listening center come true.
