Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a kindergarten teacher of a small urban school. Our population is multi-ethnic, special needs with a predominately large segment comprised of extremely high risk students. The school houses pre-k -5th grades. As with any high need population, our resources are stretched and teachers are frustrated trying to meet the educational needs of the children. I am most determined to do the best I can for these wonderful, most deserving five year old youngsters.

Some of them have not been to Pre-k or Preschool. They’ve simply been at home for 5 years with little or no exposure to science concepts (including literature, vocabulary, and language). This population requires more the basic curriculum. They lack valuable background experiences that other children are exposed to at home or Preschool. Teaching this type of student revolves around the teacher providing numerous materials and experiences that aren’t found in the curriculum. My classroom does not contain any science books, literature or manipulatives. I share a science kit with another classroom. The kit is housed in the other room. Therefore the teachable moment has become a thing of the past and is no longer relevant in my class. It’s sad because there are daily opportunities to talk about the weather. Without the materials, it’s just talk to them!

The resources I am requesting consist of Big Books, literature and manipulatives focused on the weather, sound, weights, bug boxes and other science concepts. The materials will provide hands on opportunities for exploration, exposure to science concepts and how we need to develop these concepts to sustain our daily life. It is during this stage of their development that I can engage and nurture their natural curiosity. I want to be able to demonstrate that it is because of science that we exist today

With your valuable help, I will provide immeasurable science experiences lacking in their daily life. The classroom will be well equipped to handle unexpected interests or planned units of study. It will generate lots of excitement in learning about concepts that they’ve never been exposed to or never knew that they wanted to learn about. I will be able to incorporate science into everyday projects as well as other areas of the curriculum. I am excited about science and they will be too!! It is because of your generosity that I am afforded the opportunity to write this grant. I appreciate your consideration in this project. My sincerest Thank You !!
