Alternative Ways to Teach Students with Autism

My students with autism need 2 laminating machines.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Autism is a disability that effects ones communication, sensory, and auditory processing skills. Our public school is committed to serving students with autism's diverse educational, communication, and behavioral needs in the least restrictive environment. We have 3 autism classrooms serving students from grades 1-8. As an autism team, we strive to include our students in classes with their general education peers by modifying activities and assignments through differentiated instruction. It is our goal that all of our students will participate in classes, field trips, assemblies, and other school activities to the maximum extent appropriate, based on each student's highly individualized needs.

Children with autism learn differently and demonstrate their knowledge in alternative ways. One way students with autism demonstrate what they have learned is by completing laminated activities. Individuals with autism require multiple opportunities for repetition of skills taught. Laminating an activity allows the activity to be used multiple times for one student as well as others. This helps us to be as "green" as possible. Some laminated activities allow for students to manipulate pieces and match words to a picture, or categorize foods and poisons to name a few examples. One of my students is unable to hold a pencil, therefore the majority of her educational activities are laminated and involve manipulation of pieces in order to aide learning and understanding. Our recent science topic was Taking Care of the Earth. Our vocabulary words were recycle, trash, paper, and plastic. In order for this student to access the vocabulary words, a laminated activity was made allowing her to spell the vocabulary words by manipulating the letters.

New educational laminated activities are made frequently (multiple times a week) to support students' unique learning needs. Currently, we have 2 laminating machines for 3 autism classrooms. One machine is showing signs of extreme wear and tear from years of continued and frequent use. In order for us to continue making educational activities that target our students' diverse individualized needs, we need 2 new laminating machines. Without these new machines, we will be unable to make the activities that support our students' highly individualized educational needs that allow them access to the general education curriculum.

Your help will make it possible for students with autism to receive an education that is tailor made to their specific educational, communicative, and behavioral needs.
