Boston Debate Tournament!

My students need bus tickets to attend a debate tournament in Boston. Our school does not have a debate budget.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

When many think of Debate Teams, the last place they think about is the South Bronx. But debate is alive and well in the South Bronx. Our middle school has a debate team of over 50 students and they have won numerous honors and awards in New York City. We are the largest middle school debate team in New York City. The power of expression has revolutionized our school. Students are learning how to debate and how to speak in public. Students are learning about current events, politics, philosophy, and economics. Students who have anger control problems, students who regularly get into confrontations with teachers, and students who have low reading, writing, or communication skills, have found an outlet to express themselves. Debate provides the opportunity for our students to direct their energy, passion, logic, beliefs, and opinions in a positive manner. Indeed, debate empowers our students to freely express themselves and in the process learn so much about themselves, others, and the world around them. Students this year have researched, argued, written, and listened to topics including national service, the draft, the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, Myspace.com, juvenile crime, capital punishment, trans fats, smoking, year round school, violence in video games, freedom of religion, Iraq, and many more topics. Students are given about a month to research and train for tournaments that feature four topics. And that is why I want my students to attend tournaments outside New York City. Wealthier schools and students can afford to travel in the national debate circuit and along the East Coast. We cannot. These trips for our students are so important. While our students have great pride in their awards in the local urban debate league, it is important that they travel to learn from other students and other debate leagues. And that is why this trip is so significant - the chance to compete in new places. The chance to go against the top teams in the country. The chance for our students to show their best. And, for some of my students, their first chance to travel outside of New York. Students will meet our expectations and so that is why our expectations must reach high for the skies. In order to do this, a debate team has to travel. Thank you.
