Childhood obesity isn't the only reason to provide curious sixth graders with literature on cooking and dieting. The students at our urban school care about being informed and making responsible life choices. It starts with the science of food, and is heated up in the kitchen.
No matter what our weights might be, sixth graders and adults should care about what is going in their bodies. Energy levels, concern for humanitarian plights, and empowerment all serve as exemplary launching points for hooking interested readers into cookbooks and healthy diet plans.
Cookbooks that are aimed at young adults will provide an informative platform for our young students to stand up for what gets cooked and ultimately ends up in their mouths. And hey, maybe they'll actually lend more of a hand in the kitchen by helping prepare meals for the family.
