I am a middle school language arts teacher in a high needs school district in New Jersey. We have motivated students who love to read and explore worlds new to them.

When one travels to a new land, he/she usually has a camera to take a picture. This is not the case with my students. Since they are high needs students, the only "traveling" they get to do is through reading. Unfortunately, they do not have a camera to take a picture and it can be difficult to remember exciting scenes. It is difficult to comprehend material without a concrete aide. We have a limited number of books and novels, students are not allowed to write in them or take notes. This is extremely challenging when it comes to comprehension and understanding.

Who knew that post it's had so many uses. Grocery lists, appointment reminders, hello notes on packed school lunches. They have another great use. The different colored post it flags requested can be used to enhance comprehension of reading material. Instead of marking pages, students use the different colored flags to mark certain passages. A red flag indicates misunderstanding, a blue flag represents a connection to his/her life or another text, and a green flag represents complete understanding.

Instead of copying page numbers, passages, and commentary, students will be able to signal comprehension with the pull of a tiny flag from a dispenser. If this proposal is fulfilled, students will be able to explore new worlds, understand them, and embrace them without even picking up a pencil. These concrete materials will make students into abstract and independent learners. It will enable students to become competent readers, exactly what the world needs right now.
