I am a speech language pathologist servicing several schools. My request is for one of my schools in a lower income neighborhood. There is a direct service caseload of 23 students, which includes a classroom of children with autism and two early childhood special education classrooms.

My students are rarely exposed to current events and the news. They never leave the neighborhood. This limits their world view and their ability to participate in conversations. These children have great difficulty reading, too. They have difficulty having conversations as well. Their conversation topics are limited to what they have watched on T.V. since they cannot access news on the web or in newspapers. The lack of exposure and poor reading abilities create a dilemma. How can we discuss topics to which they have had no exposure?

That is where New-2-You can help. This weekly newspaper utilizes concise, symbol-supported text to deliver current events news to special education students. News-2-You provides a weekly newspaper, news, activities, computer games and storybooks, all related to the feature story of the week. The access to weekly news at their level makes their conversations interesting and meaningful. My students love this paper. I have used it several times with them. They still make connections to some of the topics. The subscription includes: 1. Current events newspaper universally designed for its readers. 2. Four levels of reading comprehension (Simplified, Regular, Higher and Advanced Editions). 3. Two communication boards (Simplified and Regular). 4. Speaking versions of all three newspaper editions. 5. Spanish translation of the Regular Edition newspaper and communication board. 6. Activity sheets in two levels. Each sheet uses the vocabulary from the newspaper to address academic goals/standards. 7. "Joey's Locker" section featuring interactive computer games, cartoons and storybooks. 8. World News, and much more!

You can make the world come to our school for my special education students. Who knows where this will lead? Maybe they will be inspired to be a news maker, to travel the world, or to try new things because of News-2-You and your belief in them.
