Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a very poor and dangerous area. According to the area's 2005 census, only 36% of it's adults aged 25 and older have finished high school. Many of whom, I am sure, cannot read. My 5 and 6 year old students are bright and eager to learn and we need to help them learn to read well, so that they do not become part of the 64% of adults in this area who never finished high school. Reading is a very basic building block in education and success in life. I am required as a teacher to use an online reading learning program to help teach the children reading. Each child needs about 1/2 hour 4 times a week on the computer to complete this program. We have 2 working computers in our room for the 20 children to use. This is inadequate and ten times a day, every half hour I need to stop teaching the other students to set up the 2 doing the reading program causing significant lost time in other valuable lessons for all the students. The computer I am asking for is small and basic but will allow the children to complete their program. The more students that are able to use a computer at the same time means less interruptions for the rest of the class, and less lost time for them to learn. I have seen too many children fall behind in their studies, lose interest in learning because they were not proficient readers. I have no doubt that many of the 64% of adults here that didn't finish high school lost interest in school for the same reason, they never learned how to read, or to read well. Will you be the one that makes a difference in a young child's life by helping them learn to read? Will you be the one that helps me help a child to keep his or her excitement for learning and doesn't become part of the 64% per cent?
