The school where I teach is a free lunch campus with only one or two students not living pretty close to the poverty line. My students are 3/4 Spanish speaking at home. Many of my students came here after KATRINA only to be shifted again due to IKE. I teach PreK-5th grade and work in the library. All 500 of our students will benefit form your wonderful donation. My goal is to make each one of these wonderful students into a productive member of our society rather than a permanent recipient of government funding.

I teach in a very high-poverty, high need school. My students come from very under privileged families. It is very rare that a student has ANY book at home. No magazines, no newspapers. Once they reach our school, usually at 4 or 5 years old, most have never had a book read to them. Most have never fallen asleep to Goodnight Moon, or The Cat in the Hat. We have to bring all that to them now. Many of the teachers at our school work 2 extra hours every day teaching and many others work on Saturdays for tutoring students who need to catch up. These materials will be used school wide to help our kids get a fair chance in the big wide world. My dream for each of them is a chance to go to a good college and make a better way for the next generation. Your generous contribution to our Library and classrooms will help us do that. We are recovering from IKE and need new books!

I need Big Books and story telling kits to help reach my younger and my ESL students. The big books allow all the kids in the room to see the pictures at the same time and the story sets will let the students hold and touch different characters in each story. All of this is really critical in developing fluency among our children.

When you give to my project you help guarantee the generations to come. You are helping build a future of students , teens and adults who can turn to books for answers, not drugs, not gangs, not crime. Their futures can hold diplomas not inmate numbers. You can help bring whole families out of poverty and into the American dream. I am grateful , even if you do not choose my project, that you are investing in our world to come. You are making it a better place for all of us. Supporting teachers is the best, strongest foundation you can make. Thank you.
