My students need 15 copies of "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison and 11 novels from the Bluford High reading series.

Every day I open the door of literacy to high school students. Sometimes this door is locked, and sometimes this door bursts open! Unfortunately, my students often feel locked out of literacy because they lack the fluency and comprehension skills needed to pass the state standardized test.

My students need novels that they can relate to in order to become motivated readers. Many of these students read well below their grade level and are forced to either struggle with text that is too difficult (and they become frustrated) or at an elementary reading level that they cannot relate to (thus, becoming bored). The result is high school students with no motivation to improve their reading skills.

To get my students back on track and increase their reading fluency and comprehension, they need novels that are high interest with low readability. The Bluford series is a perfect solution for this dilemma! The series includes wonderful tales of teenage drama, mystery, and suspense that are written specifically for struggling readers. These novels are just what my students need to become hooked on reading again!

Your help will ensure that my students develop the reading skills necessary to become functioning citizens later in life. You can turn a spark of motivation into the flame of educational excellence by helping my struggling readers obtain necessary materials to improve their reading.
