Help my students reach outside of their own experience by providing them copies of Chaim Potok's The Chosen. Potok's classic novel requires students to look at familiar conflicts (children and parents butting heads; friends not understanding friends; and teenagers questioning their places in the world) through a new cultural lens. An American Jewish author, Potok writes about belief and family in the modern world. The situation that Potok sets up among two fathers and two sons opens students up to the cultural and literary richness of the Jewish American tradition. This is something that my English students in update New York have never experienced. Will you help us go in this new direction? We have a brand new honors program for freshmen, and we need novels that will challenge students critically and personally. The Chosen does both. Students will read the book and participate in numerous Socratic seminars. Won't you be a part of this opportunity?
