This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Learning to play the violin is a very rewarding experience. Everyday I teach students who are enthusiastic and ready to learn. Unfortunately, I teach in an elementary school where many families cannot afford to purchase or rent their own instruments.

Last year, a wonderful 4th grade classroom teacher wrote a grant to purchase 10 violins for needy students to borrow during the school year. A few months later, we were all very happy when she was awarded that grant. In May, we received the instruments and that's when I realized that there were no shoulder rests or rosin in the cases. These items are essential to learning to play the violin properly.

Since this is the first year we are able to lend out the instruments I am now scrambling to get shoulder rests and rosin for these students. When I first made the announcement about the instruments I had 8 families respond in need. Now, I have well over that. I am doing everything I can to get instruments in the hands of students who want to play violin, but we are still in need to the shoulder rests and rosin.
