We Need to Light Things Up

My students need 10 spectrum tubes to study light given off by atoms of different elements.

I teach academic chemistry and advanced chemistry classes to students in grades 10, 11 and 12 in a small, rural high school.

My students currently study the patterns of light given off by atoms of different elements when they study the structures of atoms. Students currently reference charts and diagrams of light produced by atoms of elements in their textbook and online. However, students can't produce the different types of light without samples of elements in spectrum tubes.

The resources that have been requested are spectrum tubes that contain small samples of different elements. These tubes produce bright light when electricity is applied to them. The different types of light that are produced are a direct result of atoms of different elements having different numbers and arrangements of electrons. Spectrometers can be used to separate the light given off by the different elements into patterns called line spectra. Line spectra of elements are as unique to elements as fingerprints are to people.

Having the spectrum tubes to have students actually create and study the patterns of light would greatly promote student interest in the topic. Students don't get too excited to study charts and diagrams in textbooks or online. These spectrum tubes would make a huge difference in teaching this material. Thanks for your consideration.
