Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a diverse group of 1st graders in Illinois. My student body is comprised of Hispanic American and African American students. My entire class is classified as low income. My students are wonderful and would really enjoy having their own copy of The Cat In The Hat to further our math study on weights and measurements.

How in the world did The Cat In The Hat carry all of those heavy objects at once?!? My first graders are learning about the weights of different objects based on their size.

Using the book "The Cat In The Hat", we will estimate the weights of the objects that the cat carried. We will weigh such objects as teacups, toy boats and even a rake! Being able to follow along in the text as we're reading will allow the students to make sensible guesses.

Your help will make it possible for my students to understand size and weight. You will also help my students to make sensible weight guesses based on the size of different objects.
