I teach Kindergarten in a rural Tennessee school that houses grades Pre-K-5. Approximately 78% of our student population received free or reduced lunch last school year. We expect that percentage to rise to as much as 90% this school year.

For the first time in my four years of teaching, 100% of my students are receiving free or reduced lunch, which puts them at a greater risk of falling behind their peers. They are in desperate need of materials that will provide them with experiences in the classroom that will help them to overcome the obstacles that each of them face.

As is the case with schools across the nation, in Tennessee we are working diligently to get students on target by third grade. I believe that it all begins in kindergarten. Students need a solid foundation to build upon. The Leapfrog Tag Reading System will be utilized daily during our 90 minute literacy block. During this time, students will read books with a partner using the tag system as a tool. With the Tag Reading System the students will be enabled to read and become familiar with unknown words, which will expand their limited vocabulary. Together with the Tag Reading System, the students will experience reading success with high quality children's literature that they might not otherwise come in contact with. These resources will allow me to help my students establish a firm foundation by improving their reading skills and giving them a head start on becoming successful readers.
