Calculators For Inner City Students

My students need 20 Texas Instruments® TI-30X IIS Solar Scientific Calculators which will not waste batteries.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach math at an inner city high school. We live and work in a part of the city that is regularly torn by gang violence. More of these children have watched friends or family die violently than have ever been to the beach only 10 miles away. The good news is that our school is a safe place for kids from 7:00am until 5:00pm when after school tutoring ends. In between we offer them as much opportunity and education as we can.

In the math department we teach algebra, geometry, and a full offering of math courses designed to prepare our students for entry into 4 year colleges. Unfortunately, most of our kids come to us lacking in fundamental skills such as fractions, decimals, and simple arithmetic. More than half our students take "Support Math" designed to provide remediation in these areas. But we can only do so much with lectures, projects, and creative teaching ideas.

We need tools. A favorite is the calculator, in this case a solar powered two line calculator. The top line shows the student what they have entered; what did they do to get the answer shown on the second line below. These calculators are as simple as they are powerful. Instead of listening to another lecture students can take a piece of technology and with a bit of planning on our part, discover many basic principals of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and beyond. When they are in control of the lesson they are on fire!

A new calculator, solar, wasting no batteries, provides a tool that can provide new opportunities to capture a kids attention. We send kids to MIT, UC Berkeley, and other 4 year schools...but not many. Our chief goal is to get every student to "walk", as in walk across the stage and graduate from high school. This accomplishment launches them into life equipped to find their next step. Your gift literally makes the difference between a life starting with opportunity or one that falls into obscurity in the city streets. Thank you for supporting us and these kids in making a difference in the world.
