This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I was amazed at the interest and empathy that my inner city students show to any stories about the Holocaust. I teach in a poverty level inner city high school in Massachusetts where I am a reading specialist, primarily of students who have recently learned English. My school is over 80% Hispanic. I introduced a story about Anne Frank as well as an allegory about the Holocaust last year and noticed that the interest level was very high and that the students cared about the people in the stories. I checked with other teachers and they had noticed the same. Many of the students have come from oppressive countries and so can relate to the stories. I read this book this summer and felt that this would be a perfect book for my students to read as an in-class reading circle book as it is at their interest level and it would pique their curiosity because of the age of the main characters.

My students need to be able to read the same book at a series of reading circle classes. There are not enough mature, but readable books for them at my high school. This book would stimulate them to read.

Students often come into my room with low self-esteem. They feel that they are "stupid". I spend a great deal of time convincing them that they are not stupid, but merely need to raise their comprehension level. They will not believe this if I only present them with "babyish" books.

Presenting a book like "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" as their final quarter reading circle book will empower their self-esteem and end a successful year in reading.
