To paint like a "real" artist is the desire of many of my art students. Our middle school is an urban, extremely diverse community across race, gender, socioeconomic, and educational background. We serve students who come from urban poverty and constant struggle as well as students who have had every intellectual stimulation. This mix challenges both students and teachers alike as we strive to meet the educational needs of all students at a challenging and appropriate level.

For the art classroom we have a slim departmental budget of seven dollars per student for the entire school year. As you can imagine, this does not go much beyond providing the basics of paper, pencil, colored pencils, and markers. Our students are hungry to work as real artists with quality materials. They love to paint and the thin, watery tempera on paper which wrinkles with moisture does not compare to the richness of acrylics and the texture of a blank canvas.

The resources requested here of an array of acrylic colors, canvas boards enough for two paintings for each of my students, and the aprons necessary to not make parents angry that we are using a paint that stains clothing will allow all students to push their limits as artist. They can dive into working with expressive mark making, mixing colors, and walk away with a painting that they can be proud of forever using high quality materials.

Your help will make it possible for my students to experience the richness of painting and express their diverse identities through their artwork. Without outside support like yours it would not be possible for these students to engage with new art materials and the curriculum which the medium facilitates. For some students this middle school art class has been their only exposure to the art world and this would be a project that they would remember for the rest of their lives.
