Mrs. Schrepping Harrison Park School
Portland, OR Grades 3-5

Our school celebrates the life of Chief Joseph, one day each year. This is a school-wide celebration that goes on all day long. We invite clinicians from the Nez Perce tribe to work with our students on crafts, games, and to teach about the tribe's way of life and history. Students from Pre-kindergarten through grade 5 all join in the activities. They take with them a booklet and their craft treasures, along with new learning about things that are important to the Nez Perce.

It is an important tradition in our school community that we celebrate "Chief Joseph Day". However, like most special events, there is no budget in place. Money for assemblies, artist in residence, special projects, and celebrations (like Chief Joseph Day) has to come from fund raisers or donations. Many of our students are not able to donate, or pay to participate in activities. Our clinicians donate their time, but are not able to also donate supplies for their projects. I am asking DonorsChoose to buy some of the supplies to make our special celebration possible.

Part of the Chief Joseph Day Celebration is making bead bracelets to signify the life cycle of the salmon (an important part of Nez Perce life). Students are taught lessons about the Nez Perce, found in a booklet, created by a team of our teachers. Students attend assemblies of music and dance. Students rotate through activity stations, creating art with Nez Perce representatives, who also explain how the activities connect to their tribe's history and way of life. It is a wonderful learning event that our students and teachers are really looking forward to.

Your help will ensure that our students will have a valuable experience that will impact their lives. You will make it possible that children gain new appreciation of the contributions and roles of Native Americans historically, and at present.
