Freedom Writers, Freedom Thinkers!

My students need 63 copies of "The Freedom Writers Diary" in order to complete their study on the power of student voice.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Be the change in one hundred young lives! We are working on a year long project focusing on student voice and ownership in the classroom. I teach all 9th grade students at my community based high school. 100% of our students take part in free and reduced lunch program, many are victims of community violence and all face constant pressure from gangs and racism. We work hard to assure our students receive the same or better education than those in wealthier districts, but we lack some of the resources necessary.

"The only book I have EVER enjoyed!"--one of my 9th grade students regarding The Freedom Writer's Diary. I recently introduced The Freedom Writer's Diary to a small group of students. The response was overwhelming and I am constantly lending the single copy I have to different students each day. I've had several tell me that it is the only book they have ever read in their lives that has spoken to them. I feel strongly that my students can all benefit from the amazing empowerment this book offers for young people.

A set of Freedom Writer's Diary books will allow all my students the opportunity to witness how a small group has made great change. The 150 Freedom Writers all went from a struggling environment into the world, prepared for college and bonded as a classroom community. My goal for all my students is that they can take the lessons and critical thinking skills FWD provides and apply them to their own lives. The violence and struggles facing the original Freedom Writers very much mirrors the situations my students face. This book is a true account of what is possible in the lives of all young people with the right tools and the right education. I am so excited to see my students succeed with this book!

By donating your help to our school and to our students, you will make a huge change in many, many lives. My students are working hard towards college, but often, because of the intensity facing them and their communities, they struggle to see the bigger picture, to believe that they are worth it, that they can survive their troubled lives. This book is a first-hand account of 150 teens who made it, who graduated, who went on to college, who continue to contribute to education today through their work and voice. I believe that my students have the same potential to be small revolutionaries, to change the world and to change their future. Thank you.
