Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher with a class of energetic and engaging students who are ready to take responsibility for their learning.

During independent work time, my students have demonstrated great responsibility in finishing their work. At this time, my students are able to choose from a list of "may do" activities to reinforce skills learned in class. Some activities include games, working on the computer, and library time. I would like to add a fluency activity, where students work together to read passages that will give the students practice to increase their fluency. In order for them to boost their fluency, they need materials that will motivate them.

Having different leveled fluency passages will give my students the opportunity to work together to build their fluency. Being a fifth grade teacher has made me realize how competitive the students are at this age. Having digital timers will help make fluency a motivational activity. The students will try competing against each other by increasing their fluency level. With the digital timers, the student who is listening to the student reading the passage will focus on the reader and not the time. The students can also make compete against him or herself. Students can keep a record of their reading fluency in a folder. Each time they read they can use a marker to write on their folder how many words they read a minute. Students will be able to see their growth. This will help them set individual goals.

Your help will ensure that all my students become motivated in practicing fluency. As students build fluency, they will become better fluent readers and boost their reading comprehension.
