“But I can’t see my bones. I can’t hear my heart.” That’s the difficult part about teaching a science unit on the skeletal and muscle systems to third graders. The concepts are not taught using a “hands-on” approach. The students believe what teachers tell them. They know they have bones and a heart muscle but can’t directly interact with them. That’s where a skeleton model to manipulate and a stethoscope to listen to their heart muscle would be very beneficial. Ours is a very rural school in North Carolina. We have two businesses (gas stations) in a three mile radius of the school! Our children are blessed with great families and the school has a dedicated staff with minimal turnover but funding sources are minimal!

Our school has a motivated staff that tries to incorporate technology into most lessons and every unit. Third graders were treated to an iChat presentation last year. iChat is a software that allows students to conduct a video conference with other classes and/or schools. The students are hoping to create their own iChat presentation this year and we want the experience to be of value to the other classes viewing it. We are hoping to wrap up our unit on the skeletal and muscle systems by presenting our findings to third graders in another school in our district. Presentations on the location and functions of bones would be extremely enhanced with skeleton models to illustrate. The explanation on how the heart muscle operates would be more easily explained with a demonstration using a stethoscope. We don’t have the funds to buy materials to supplement each science unit so we are requesting funds for materials that could be reused yearly.

We hope to acquire five 16 inch skeleton models. Students will work in groups using the skeletons to identify bones and their function in the skeletal system. Technology is integrated as the information is put into a common database that is used to answer questions later. We also hope to acquire ten stethoscopes. Students will use the stethoscopes to record their heart rate at rest. After some vigorous exercising, the students will again record their heart rate. Differences will be discussed and explanations offered. Predictions will be made regarding the effect of other activities like walking, sleeping, etc. Technology is integrated with a spreadsheet that the students complete to find out how many times their heart might beat in a year’s time. Finally, the iChat presentation would be conducted with the models and stethoscopes to the benefit of other third graders in our district.

Your help will provide students this year and in the future with a concrete way of looking at two of the systems in their bodies. The additional benefits from presenting to a live audience; researching, creating and practicing a presentation; learning healthy ways to keep these body systems in good shape; and using 21st century technology are hard to quantify. But I guarantee the unit will be a memorable one for many!
