Rock My World

My students need a rock tumbler to help them understand weathering of rocks.

Our earth is weathering all around us. We study weathering and erosion in our 4th grade classroom. Last summer, in a science class, it was suggested that we teach weathering using a rock tumbler so each student could experience weathering rocks. They will also be measuring them each day for a few weeks. We all know that hands-on teaches better than only reading it in a book. Seeing a rock slowly disappear will be very dramatic!

Hands-on is the best way to teach science. Just picture the student's excitement when they see a rock wear away. A rock tumbler is something that is a luxury, thus something not funded by a school when funds are so low. Please help the students become part of their learning, and become excited about science.

A rock tumbler will show how our mountains and rocks weather away to form sand, and or arches. Utah is unique in their arches, and weathering rocks using a rock tumbler will help to show this process.

Your help will insure that my students learn what weathering is and its effect on our environment.
