Building Language And Social Skills In The Block Corner

My students need blocks and various toys for the block center such as dolls, animals, and cars.

Do I have future architects in my classroom? I am a kindergarten teacher in a self contained ESL class. All of my students are English Language Learners. Many different languages are spoken in my classroom. As you probably know, every class is completely different from the past years. They all have different needs and interests. This year I have 19 boys in my class and only 5 girls. I have noticed that a large group of the non verbal boys gravitate towards the block area during choice time. They love building with the blocks, and they make some intricate structures. Unfortunately, due to lack of appropriate materials, this tends to be a solitary activity. There is very little conversation going on. I would like to add some toys to the block area that foster interaction and language. With the right toys, and some guidance from myself, I hope to build their language skills and social skills through play. Picture this: Instead of three children sitting side by side building their own house we can have the same three children working together to build a zoo for the animals. Instead of two children zooming cars around with no purpose, we can have them working cooperatively putting a train track together. Instead of having a child build a house just to knock it down; she can build a house for a doll and invite another friend to bring her doll over. I know that this is a lot of materials to ask for. However these supplies can be used over and over again with future classes. They can benefit hundreds of students. There are so many opportunities to build language and social skills in the block area with the right supplies and guidance. Please help me get my students talking and interacting with each other. Thank you!
