Microscope Illuminates Science for Children with Autism

My students with autism need a microscope in order to gain a hands-on understanding of science.

I teach 8 children with autism who are included full time in general education classes. This is a small inner city public school that has a 92% poverty rate. This year, we have begun a special project in which special education students are learning side by side with their general education peers.

Like many children with autism and many general education children, my students are bright, eager learners. They show a keen interest in the world of numbers and words. My students are different from others, however, in that they have their own unique learning styles. They are far less likely to learn from listening to a verbal description. They are much more likely to learn from hands-on experiences. This year, a number of my students will take the citywide science tests. There are standards that all the students are expected to reach in science. I have been searching for a way to help my students to really understand the science curriculum.

A good quality student microscope would allow students to take the information that has been presented on the page or in a discussion and actually experience for themselves what it means. I know my students have never seen or used a microscope. I think it would be a real eye-opener for them. It would help them make the mental leap from the page to genuine understanding.

Your support can help ensure that a rigorous curriculum which includes science is available to all elementary school students at my school, no matter what their abilities or disabilities.
