In the past two years, the band program at my school has grown from approximately fifteen students to over a hundred. Students begin learning an instrument in fourth grade and continue in fifth grade. My school is high-need and the band program has given many students an opportunity they wouldn't normally have.

One of our holiday concert pieces, "Minka's Sleigh Ride," uses temple blocks as the horse hooves for the sleigh. It ends also with the sound of a whip followed by a hopefully resounding 'hey!' from the band. This piece would definitely not be complete without either of these instruments.

By having a set of temple blocks and a whip, the percussionists in the band could easily learn how to play them to invigorate the piece. My school has a very active general music program as well and both instruments can be used in music classes for all grade levels, from kindergarten to fifth grade. The students are not usually exposed to these instruments and both playing them and hearing them would be a great experience for them.

With your help in purchasing these instruments, you will be helping my band students present a concert that sounds mature beyond their years. Your help will ensure that my younger elementary students will get exposure to more sounds and become acquainted with more instruments as well.
