Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher of Reading and Language Arts with Social Studies integrated into my curriculum. I have two classes (as I team teach). My homeroom consists of Accelerated and Gifted & Talented learners. About one-third of them are ESL students. My other class is all ESL Regular Education students.

I teach for a large district in a Title 1 school. More than 80% of the students at my school are economically disadvantaged which automatically makes them considered at risk for not graduating from high school. Our number one goal is to lay a solid educational foundation for all these children to be successful and to complete school so that they can hopefully look forward a brighter future.

I am truly hoping that I will be sponsored for a one year subscription for Weekly Reader for each student. We once had Weekly Readers provided by the school, but unfortunately funding for that is no longer available. Weekly Reader is a wonderful cross-curriculum non-fiction resource that not only teaches kids about current events, but is very kid and teacher friendly and just plain appealing.

Having Weekly Reader available for all my students will give them ownership of their own "newspaper" that is age appropriate and isn't your run of the mill worksheet.
