Mrs. D. Camanche Middle School
Camanche, IA Grades 6-8

I teach 8th grade science student that are from a moderate poverty-rural area in Iowa. This high-needs classroom contains special education students, and well as talented and gifted students.

I want students to think outside of the BOX! What we teach in 8th grade is a sounding board for the sciences. Because of the low-income and rural setting, the opportunities and resources of the parents limit the educational experiences of robotic clubs, activities, and adventures. Living far from major cultural centers also limits the student's ability to take part in educationally intensive programs, clubs, and competitions.

Providing a chance for these rural student to participate in creating a robot will allow them to apply physical science to 21st century life. In our current lifestyle, we continue to rely on robots for all major industrial production, medical procedures, and mechanical engineering. Exposing these students to robotics will greatly increase their interest and abilities in finding post-secondary jobs that relate to the field of robotics. These robots are able to perform over 40 different tasks using USB computer programing. Boe-bot's also have the ability to be upgraded with infra-red sensors, robotic arm packages, and various motor propulsion devices. Using these robots not only allows the student to learn basic programing, but they can learn about complex robotic programming using the same robot.

By making it possible for both special needs students, and gifted student to participate in robotics you will help two types of students with high needs. Teaching both of these type of student in the same setting allows students to interact and learn with each other towards a common goal. This opportunity will help to create a stronger and unified work force in our rural area in the future. Encouraging all students to look toward science and math careers during their 8th grade year is vital for high school achievement, and focus in their educational career and job preparation.
