I teach Health and P.E. to a wonderful group of 7th graders in a high poverty area of Idaho.

These students grow up in an area where there is a lot of drug use, particularly meth and alcohol. I am trying to get them to understand what impairment is and how it will affect them as they try to perform simple acts of balance and coordination. My plan is to use the fatal vision goggles in a series of activities that will involve riding a tricycle through an obstacle course, driving a remote controlled car, use of fine motor skills, and guidance through a standard field sobriety test all while wearing different sets of fatal vision goggles that simulate different blood alcohol levels.

For this project I need the fatal vision simulated effects of alcohol kit. This will provide me with the resources necessary to simulate different blood alcohol levels to my students. Through this project they will be able to see first hand how drugs and alcohol impair their abilities in even the most simple tasks. The use of goggles that simulate different blood alcohol levels will also help students identify how more alcohol results in increased impairments. This project will show students first hand how seriously alcohol can affect their abilities to perform these activities, and the best part is they don't ever have to try alcohol to learn how it will affect them.

According to alcoholalert.com In 2006, there were 13,470 fatalities in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver (BAC of .08 or higher) – 32 percent of total traffic fatalities for the year. 16,005 people were killed in the United States in alcohol-related motor vehicle traffic crashes (BAC of .01 or higher). Your help in making this project a reality will not only teach my students about the dangers of alcohol impairment you will also be helping to prevent my students from choosing to drink and drive.
