It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's a frustrated middle-schooler hurtling out the media center door after realizing he's read every graphic novel on the shelf! I am the media coordinator at a middle school with 550 students, many of whom are avid readers.

They file in, fingers crossed, hoping they'll see a title that they haven't already read before. There are a few triumphant grins, but by and large I see disappointed faces trooping out. Students love the dynamic drawing and exciting plots of comics and graphic novels, and are always clamoring for more.

These 19 titles will increase our collection by 20%, and will increase our patron satisfaction level by 100%. Graphic novels are positive reading choices for many reasons. Students gain confidence in reading as they successfully complete these books at a faster pace than traditional ones. Many feature high level vocabulary. Graphic novels often serve as "gateway" books, leading students to read more and more varied books. Plus, their brains get a good workout, having to simultaneously "read" pictures and text.

Your help will make it possible for our students to explore new worlds through reading, sparking their imagination and solidifying their appreciation for the power of the book.
