"Ask not what your school can do for you, but what you can do for your school." Words very similar to these once articulated the mission of a great President and today they echo the sentiments of a group of eighth grade students who desperately wish to bridge the gap between school, parents and community through a student newspaper.

My principal approached my eighth grade students with his growing concern for our school...the continental divide of communication between students, parents and the community. His concern was that this problem had created a tear in the very foundation that solidified our educational community, and that if we did not act soon it would be beyond repair. My students did not hesitate and immediately responded, "How about we start a school newspaper!" They explained that it would contain a parent, student, and community section, in addition to local and world news. They also envisioned their newspaper becoming available on-line with an audio component for the hearing impaired. My principal was impressed with their energy and enthusiasm. However, he stated there would be obstacles to overcome. Their first obstacle would be what to use for a computer that would allow them the accessibility and time necessary to effectively produce a quality newspaper? The student’s response…a laptop computer designated specifically for the newspaper that would be available for students to work on during their free time. Its portability would give students additional access to work from multiple locations.

A laptop computer will allow my students the versatility to work when they have free time, as well as during class. They will be able to create a newspaper that will serve as a link between the students, parents and community, nurturing the delicate bond that binds the three together. The newspaper will become a public forum, as well as a historic document for generations to come. The newspaper will be a primary source for teaching the First Amendment; students will not just read about the First Amendment, they will live it. Their newspapers will serve as living documents that will become the heartbeat of the school community. The laptop computer combined with the newspaper project will help promote lifelong ambitious work ethics.

Your generous donation of a laptop computer for my middle school students will provide them with the tools to unite a school and community. I am confident that they will not disappoint you and that your contribution to their education will be a gift that will continue to give for many years. Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.
