I teach a self-contained classroom for children on the autism spectrum and with Fragile X Syndrome. They are in third and fourth grade. Although it is a self-contained class we do spend some time with the general education population.

We spend a great deal of time working on personal hygiene issues. These include hand washing, brushing teeth, blowing and wiping noses and in one case toilet training. One of the good habits we try to show the children is the importance of clean hands. The sink in the classroom has only cold water for safety reasons, so even after showing them the correct procedure to wash, their hands don't get too clean with cold water. The cold and flu season are about to descend upon us and that is always a challenging time of year for us. The germs get spread very quickly since their hands are not being totally cleaned. If they are sick and can't be in school then they can't learn.

I would like to set up 3 stations within the classroom that would have hand sanitizers mounted to the walls. They will be in the 3 main work areas so that the children don't need to walk across the room and interrupt others who are working to clean their hands. The dispensers will be conveniently located and will help reduce the amount of germs spread among the children (and adults) in the room.

This sounds like such a simple issue, but for children with significant needs it is a very important life skill we are teaching them. Clean hands means less sickness. You can make it possible to keep these children healthy and in school so they won't have to miss days in school due to illness. Thank you for considering helping these children.
