I teach SPECIAL EDUCATION students in a pull-out resource room setting. I serve students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. My school is full of dedicated staff and more importantly students. Students who want desperately to perform as their peers. Unfortunately, they have become accustomed to performing below grade level and therefore it is difficult for me to meet their needs when they are so many and I am only one.

I am proud to call myself a special education resource room teacher. I entered into this profession with a naive understanding surrounding funding and the level of financial burden my own back account would suffer. I have curriculum that is older than I, an already high caseload, and it isn't even October yet. My students deserve an opportunity to do great things. But they need support. I will be there to encourage, instruct, listen, and learn. But I can't do it alone. I will not give up on them because I know all they need is someone to speak on their behalf. That person is me.

Students enter my classroom with a multitude of deficits. Deficits that I am constantly trying to help them overcome. While receiving instruction in a special education classroom, students need 1 sound amplification system to accommodate for auditory integration disorders. In addition, they require 1 book within the content area of reading for 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade levels for instructional materials to aide in critical thinking strategies (4 books total). Another very helpful piece of support would be 1 resource for instructional differentiation in the general education classrooms. Lastly, to help with executive functioning, students would benefit from having 1 to 3 timers to help with self-monitoring. I don't see a disability and think what that person can't do, when I see the word disabled, I make it a personal task to figure out what that person's special ability is and how they can capitalize on it. Teaching students who are in special education requires much more than just appropriate curriculum, supplies, support staff, and dedicated parents. Teaching students in special education requires someone special.

My enthusiasm for teaching shows every day. Students often return home and tell their parents about some strange or funny thing I said or did that made them laugh. Whether I am tripping over my own two feet and then trying to blame my clumsiness on a student who was in close proximity, or standing at the front of the classroom with my right eyebrow raised waiting for students to give me their attention, parents learn very quickly that although I am silly and enjoy goofing off, there is a purpose for my off beat classroom management style. I create in my student the desire to work hard and please not only me but themselves. I am an entertainer. I see myself this way because keeping the attention of students is the first way to get them engaged in the learning process. Besides, laughing is good for the soul, and these kids need a place to feel calm, secure and know that their dignity will be preserved. Please help
