My students need a digital camera to take pictures of those daily learning experiences to post to our classroom web page.

I teach 2nd grade in a low-income, high-need community. Many parents in our community are single and working 2+ jobs. We also have a high Hispanic population making the language barrier a concern.

I am the technology leader at my school and I was discussing with my students one day about ways to involve the community and show them what we do at school. Several of the students brought up the idea of posting pictures on our website of children working and learning. They were very interested in the topic so I suggested making a classroom scrapbook page where we would post such pics. The students loved the idea and jumped right on board. The only problem is we don't have a digital camera to document those moments.

We need a digital camera to photograph ourselves learning, playing, and enjoying our school. This will give the students a sense of importance when they can go online at home, or at school, and show their parents and other family members themselves at school and the things they do. The students can explain what was going on in each picture thus giving them "ownership" of the situation. The students will learn the value of pride by seeing themselves on a computer doing great work, a sense of self by being able to say "Hey, that's me! Look at how long a story I am writing", and a sense of importance by being the focus of a situation. These are things the students in my class desperately need. By giving them an outlet in a technology format, not only will they be learning lessons now, they will be preparing for our ever-changing world of technology.

They will be able to type the captions that will accompany the pictures posted on the web. Your help will give my students their own little corner of the world-wide-web!
