During my planning time, I work with gifted 7th and 8th grade students at a charter school in Florida. Our school serves Kindergarten through 8th grade students and focuses on educating the whole child.

Bright Students - Dull Curriculum. Working with gifted students who need to be challenged both academically and creatively can be challenging. Often, these students are overlooked because they tend to learn material quickly and many teachers feel that they 'learn on their own'. While this may be true of some gifted students, most still need to be challenged and be exposed to new ideas and opportunities in order to maintain a high interest in school. We meet weekly to work on social and emotional issues, problem solving skills, and activities stressing higher order thinking skills. Additionally, we spend time learning to work cooperatively and developing leadership potential. It is often difficult to find a curriculum that will meet these criteria while being engaging, fun and interesting to these exceptional students.

After an teacher in-service program on Claymation Animation, I was inspired to introduce my gifted students to the process. My students will work in small groups (developing their leadership skills and cooperative learning skills), will brainstorm ideas for their own Claymation Animation storyline (developing both their creativity and imagination), and will create their own Claymation Animation (developing their use of technology along with the visual arts). After creating a storyboard in their group for their animation, the students will create a backboard (setting), Claymation figures, and accessories for their story. The group will work cooperatively to move the Claymation pieces and take photographs of each movement. The photos will be pieced together into a PowerPoint presentation that will become a Claymation Animation. The more photos, the better the animation! The animations will be shown at a PTA meeting and to other students in our school. The gifted students will have the opportunity to teach other students the process of creating their own Claymation Animations, thus cementing the learning process!

Your help will ensure that these bright students have the opportunity to be challenged to their fullest potential in areas outside of the traditional curriculum of reading, writing, and arithmetic, while at the same time encouraging skills of cooperation, teamwork, and creativity. Thank you for making this possible!
