Phonics Readers for Kindergarten and First Graders

My students need a set of 50 "I Can Read" books.

I am the ESL teacher for our urban school and I work with students at every grade level. We have a growing number of students arriving from all over the world and English is their second language. I would love to see my Kindergartners and First Graders develop their literacy skills and enjoy reading books in English. First grade is such an important year for developing their reading skills and colorful, funny books will keep them interested especially when they will be able to tell everyone about their favorite parts. They will then be able to trade their book by switching with a friend.

As a child, didn't you have a favorite book you wanted to read over and over again? These paperbacks will allow the students to read them in school and take them home to read again to their family members. Hopefully they will increase their interest in reading and boost their self esteem. Additionally, it will make them confident with their oral presentation skills which is an important part of learning a new language.

Most of our lending library consists of books that are outdated or not at the right reading level for these students. This selection should be interesting for our young population. Remember how exciting it was when you received a new book? Especially if it had a funny title, or cute pictures? This project will give a boost to students that have to start learning to read at such an accelerated speed to 'catch up' especially since it will be a new alphabet, new words, new language. Please help to empower a child with language and literacy.

Make a difference with these children and help us attain new materials that can be enjoyable to 5-7 year olds. Your generosity will help these students become rich in language!
