Are you my friend? Children with special needs often have difficulty developing social connections.

Many of the 20 children with special needs in our classroom have social difficulties. They find it difficult to talk to their peers and to show pride in their accomplishments. Preschool is a social learning environment and without adequate social skills, many learning and friendship opportunities are lost.

Recently we borrowed a camera and photographed the children in typical daily activities. We then displayed the photos as a slide show and noticed that the non-verbal children would point to the picture and then to that classmate! Children with limited verbal abilities became highly motivated to learn their classmates' names. They watched the slide show over and over saying "That me?" and "That (classmate name)?" After viewing the slide show, one child who commonly has difficulty interacting appropriately with peers, took the blocks displayed in the photo to the peer in the photo and said, "Play me?" They both played and learned together for an extended time and the peer then said, "B. is my friend!" With a camera available daily we could make photograph communication boards and slide shows for each activity area displaying the opportunities available. Children could record and view their work and e-mail their photos to their parents to show what they do in preschool when they do not yet have the vocabulary necessary.

Your help could open a whole new level of learning that can prevent behavioral problems, motivate complex learning, and help diminish the social stigma of special needs. Kids can learn to see the abilities instead of the disabilities!
