Step Up To the Mike! At-Risk Teens Record Memoirs

My students need 3 portable digital audio recorders.

Mr. Zublin Kalapuya High School
Eugene, OR Grades 9-12

Every year my high school English students start off by writing personal narratives. This is a good way for me to get to know them, and it's a good warm-up for more challenging types of writing. I'm always amazed to read about the lives of my at-risk students. But, what's the use of taking all the time to write these little memoirs if the students see them as just another assignment to hand in, get back with a grade and a few comments and then toss? These writings are too poignant, too funny, too powerful to live and die on paper. So, after writing them, the students record their narrations as a "radio show" a la "This American Life." They team up to create a common theme, choose music appropriate to this theme, and make an audio recording. All that we use to do this is a single, very poor quality microphone, which we use with a very basic computer audio recorder. They don't end up sounding very good. But they could! This assignment has great potential, and you can help us achieve it. We just need three good quality audio recorders so that three groups can simultaneously produce three great-sounding shows. These memoirs need to come to life! Thank you for considering our request.
