Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in a high poverty, urban school. My students are 3 and 4 years old. 90% of my students speak a language besides English at home. Our class is designed to prepare these young children for kindergarten and a life full of learning.

Young students learn best when they can relate what they are learning to something they already know. Living in a city, my students are very aware of different types of transportation, such as trains, buses, taxis, cars, boats and ferries. I'd like to create a month-long unit about transportation for the children to develop other skills such as beginning reading skills and writing skills. I will also incorporate math, science and social studies into the unit.

Because these students already have basic knowledge about transportation it will make it easier to have discussions (to build oral language skills) and to participate in activities and projects in all academic areas.

You have the power to jump start this unit! By funding this project you will be providing my students with the books needed to teach this unit. The books will be read aloud to students and used in discussions to teach basic book knowledge. The books will also be available for students to read in the classroom library. This will be wonderful and exciting unit that will build and reinforce skills these children will need to prepare for kindergarten.
