My seventh grade students would like to create a broadcasting studio to help link our community, parents and students through the technology of Podcasting. The students have high hopes and they have already named their Podcasting studio, “Bulldogs Live”; the bulldog is our school mascot. Our middle school is unique in the fact that it functions as a social forum for gathering and exchanging information. We pride ourselves and treasure our family environment. We are continuously seeking ways to further improve communication between the three.

The problem we are facing is with “communication” and how to provide a link to parents and community members that will provide information in a timely, convenient, easily accessible fashion. Students feel that community members and parents are not connected enough to the school, and due to a lack of information many important events and pieces of information are lost to parents and community members. They would like to have a way to provide quality information in an easy, audio format. Podcasting in just that avenue!

Students researched many famous historic speeches and were convinced that Podcasting is the radio format of the present. Broadcasts can be listened to live or saved for a more convenient time. Saved Podcasts also provide the benefit of being able to re-listen to presentations, rewind, fast forward or even amplify the volume. This will make information available to our hearing impaired listeners. Digital Voice recorders, headsets and microphones will allow students to record audio on field trips, around school grounds, at meetings or even take voice notes. The voice recorders will double as a flash drives and allow students to transfer documents from one computer to another. The equipment will also allow students to travel outside the school into the community for events and interviews. Additionally, the students are planning on creating a special series dedicated to community member personal interviews as an historic tribute to their community. Local events can also be recorded and then broadcast.

As our nation has been historically empowered by radio broadcasts, donors can empower the students of our school with a generous donation of Podcasting equipment. “On this day” donors can make a difference and contribute to the education of not just a group of eighth grade students who “have a dream” but a community that is seeking a legacy of unity.
