Inner City Students Navigate More than Crowded Streets

My students need 10 Brunton compasses.

If you've ever been to New York City, you probably know that navigating the Subway system can be slightly challenging. While my 117 Earth-Science students at the High School for Environmental Studies in New York City are professionals at navigating the Subway system and the crowded streets of the City, I have found that when I take them into the park or on hiking trips through the woods, they are completely lost! This utter disconnect with nature is something that I hope to ameliorate with your generous contribution to our outdoor-mapping-based Unit on Topographic Maps. As mapping is one of the foundational principles of Earth Science, I hope to help my students gain a better understanding of their natural surroundings by having them look at topographic maps of our school and the surrounding area (Central Park is in the same quadrangle map!) followed by an exploration of the area with Brunton compasses. After learning how to read the topographic maps, students will venture into the park and measure the strikes and dips of local rock outcrops to try and decipher the movement of glaciers through the area as well as locations of uplift throughout the park. Following their exploration of the park, they will produce their own maps of the suggested underlying bedrock below Central Park and our school, which we would love to share with you. Understanding the natural world below our feet is increasingly important to students in science today, and your contribution to our Earth Science program will help 117 inner-city students get part of the way there.
