This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach math and science to all the 5th graders at my low-income school in South East Washington, DC.
Textbooks are fine, but there are better ways to teach children about life science! My children are nearly obsessed with the one betta fish I have in my classroom right now. My students have actually gone to the library to check out books on betta fish to learn more about our little friend.
Last year, I solicited and received help from generous DonorsChoose donors who provided our classroom with fire-bellied toads and tree frogs. I witnessed first hand children become engaged in reading about and caring for our animals, including students who previously said "Science is boring" finished the school year wanting to pursue careers in science! The effect these animals had on my students cannot be overstated.
I would like to help my students learn about life science and animal life cycles through the use of green tree frogs, guppies, and mealworms. I am also requesting the necessary aquaria supplies to house our live specimens.
Do you love science? Do you have a career in science, or are you someone who loves animals and science as a hobby? You can help some of the neediest young people in the city develop their own love of science, observation, study, and application of new knowledge. Your gift can and will have a powerful impact on my students. Thank you so much for anything you can contribute!!
