Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am doing a behavior modification program for my school. I teach in an inner city school in a very economically deprived area. My students come to school with all the "baggage" that poverty breeds. This baggage manifests itself with poor behavior in the classroom.

Negative behavior interferes with learning. I would like to reduce negative behavior by rewarding positive behavior. We have about 50 students in grades 2 through 6 which are considered high risk because of their behavior and poor performance in school. I would like to start a game club at our school where these students can earn earn Dunbar Dollars for positive behavior or classroom effort. When 10 Dunbar Dollars are earned, they can then be exchanged for game time. The student can take a selection of board games to his classroom and share them with his classmates for a 30 minute "game time".

I need a selection of board games to use with students. I would like a good variety of games with different ability and interest levels. A student who has had little success in school because of behavior or effort, can earn the respect of his peers if he is the one that has earned "game time" for the class.

Your funding of this project will teach my students that good behavior will pay off in many ways, academic as well as social. Behavior as well as student self-esteem will improve.
