Hooray! This project is fully funded

I am a teacher in an inner city public school district. Most of my students are below level in reading. I have a variety of reading levels in my classroom and some special needs students. All of our students participate in the free lunch program.

Some obstacles that my students face are lack of financial means to buy books and someone to encourage them to read daily. They do not have a love for literature. They have not been introduced to different types of literature and lack prior knowledge in many areas. Many do not come from homes where education is put first. Their limited vocabulary and comprehension skills causes them to struggle with the state exams.

I am asking for the novel Runaway Ralph because we just finished The Mouse and the Motorcycle. They loved that book and could not wait to read each day. I saw excitement in them and I want to continue with the sequel to a story they have already read. The weekly readers will assist me in teaching non-fiction reading. The weekly reader includes different genres and allows me to include history, science and other topics in our reading block. The weekly reader helps students to build their non-fiction comprehension and helped my students last year improve their online test scores.

Your help with this project will ensure that students get introduced to real books and stories as well as articles. They can continue their enthusiasm for reading and we can not wait to see what our favorite character will do next.
