My students each need these specific magnetic journal with the tiles to participate while in small reading groups to create sounds and the words they are learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The school that I teach in is an urban elementary school, which contains grades Pre-K to grades 8. My class consists of eager fourth and fifth grade students who are ready to learn reading and math. Throughout the day, independent and social skills are taught and practiced through a variety of activities.

All of the students in my class are reading at a much lower level than their grade level peers. They have difficulties with the many basic areas of reading, such as phonics, rhyming, and even letter/sound recognition. They have to build these skills which in turn will help in building their fluency and comprehension and most importantly their self-esteem in reading.

The resources that I need for this project are the Magnetic Journals with Phoneme Tiles. They are exclusive to the Wilson Reading Program. My students are currently using this program while working in small groups in our resource room. These magnetic letters correspond with the program. They are color coded and will aide in the learning process of letters and sounds, blends and digraphs. They will help they children begin to blend words together and read those words. It will help us when modifying lessons for the lower students by telling them to pick up the red tile, while to the other we can say pick up the vowel. It will be a unified system among all of the children and help all of them to learn the basics of phonics, which they all need.

You will make it possible for all the students to have their own magnetic journals so they can learn and explore letters, sounds and word building on their own and especially while working in group lessons.
