Helping Hands Knitting and Quiltmaking Group

My students need a sewing machine to participate in The ABC Quilt Project, a nation-wide project whose mission is to create quilts for babies with HIV and other serious illnesses.

I am a former high school Spanish teacher currently working as a school social worker in New York. We are a new public school serving a mostly low-income student population. I am a 9th grade Advisory teacher and supervise Helping Hands. Helping Hands is an extracurricular co-ed group whose mission is to knit items to be donated to different charity organizations, and to raise awareness about the special needs of others, both locally and abroad.

Our group started in 2006. I taught students how to knit with the purpose of donating all items. We have participated in the Save the Children's Caps to the Capital program to help save newborns, as well with CHABA (Children Affected by HIV/AIDS), a non-profit whose mission is to create hand-knit comfort dolls to raise awareness in the US about the plight of children in Africa. As the group grows in size and there is an interest in learning to sew, I have decided to incorporate quiltmaking as one of our activities.

As with most crafts, hand-piecing a quilt top is time-consuming work. We would be able to better utilize our time and human resources with a sewing machine, helping us to turn out a greater number of baby quilts. Quiltmaking teaches creativity and develops mathematical skills. Students learn to work collaboratively and become aware of the need to help others.

With your generous help, our mission to help as many as possible becomes a greater reality. Our students are enthusiastic about this opportunity to reach out to others in need and to develop new skills that enrich not only their lives but those of others.
