Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher at a Title One school in northern California. My first grade team is striving hard to teach students everything they need to be successful and is doing everything it can so "No Child is Left Behind".

One of the ways our school is addressing the needs of our students is by leveling our reading program this fall. We already have students in leveled English Language Development groups. With the addition of leveled reading groups, (and eventually, we will be leveling math) our students are required to travel from one classroom to the next to receive instruction at their level. The problem we have is that children may change classes one to three times a day. To prevent the spread of germs and to help with organization of student supplies and personal items, I feel it is important for each child to have his own storage area in each classroom. The homeroom students use the inside of their desks, but the "traveling" students do not have a storage area. Many times a day, I hear from my six-year old students, "Where's my pencil?" or "I can't find my scissors!". This takes away from valuable instructional time and causes a lot of frustration for students and teacher.

The solution for the "traveling" reading students' organizational problems would be to store their materials and supplies in the "At-Your-Seat Storage Sack" which hangs on the back of the students' chairs. Each child needs to feel like he has his own place for learning. By giving these students their own storage sacks, everyone would be organized and on task.

We can't waste a precious minute trying to get organized each time the students move to another room. The "At-Your-Seat Storage Sacks" will create happy organized children who are more attentive and prepared to learn.
