Mrs. K. Dothan Brook School
White River Junction, VT Grades 3-5

Can you imagine if you didn't understand the social world around you but didn't know to ask questions about it? I'm a 3rd year special education teacher in a fabulous elementary school in Vermont. I work with all grades, K-5, it depends on the year. This year I am working with the 2nd grade team and the 5th grade team. We have a very high percentage of special education students from a variety of backgrounds with a low income population and employees of Dartmouth Hospital and college. We are 23% special education (69 of 305 students), serving students with a huge variety of needs. Within this continuum of needs are children on the Autism Spectrum. On my caseload in 5th grade, I have 5 students on the spectrum.

I hold a social skills check in group 3 mornings a week for 30 minutes (8-8:30). I have been following the THINK SOCIAL! curriculum with them. We have discussed our group norms and created expectations for how we want our group to run. We are now ready to dive into some specific instruction on metacognition around pragmatic language. This curriculum suggests using video modeling for instruction. I shared this with the students, that I wanted to video tape and have them watch and critique themselves. Then they asked if they could make a social skills video for other students to watch! This is so exciting!

In order to fully implement this project we need a small, usable video camera. We have the programs necessary on our school network to create this video and to watch ourselves and critique. This will benefit the students by allowing them to become metacognitive about their social thinking. They so often do not understand how their behavior effects others and typically cannot read social cues to know what to do (or not to do) next. I want to help them to THINK SOCIAL as much as possible when they are in situations every day. They move to the middle school next year and I feel that these skills are critical right now. We can practice and critique in a small, safe environment.

Your help will ensure that my students will have the opportunity to learn to think critically about their social interactions with peers. You will make it possible for a group of 5th grade boys to recognize that social skills are difficult for them, problem solve about it, and create a document to educate their peers and younger students about social skills. Thank you for considering this project.
