Love for Literacy: Reading can be Relevant

My students need 10 copies of the following titles: "Crash", "Stargirl", and "Pictures of Hollis Woods", along with an audiobook and teacher's guide for "Stargirl" and "Pictures of Hollis Woods".

Brilliant thinkers can light up the darkest of scenes. I teach 6th and 7th graders. We are a Title I school, and over seventy five percent of our school population is free and reduced lunch. These kids are bright, respectful, and always give it their best shot. Won't you give them yours?

My students are always asking me for books to read. I'm a bookstore junkie and I go to the bookstore all the time and buy books that I think will inspire a love of reading in my students. And the books that I choose typically are out for weeks until they've been read by almost every student. Unfortunately, my salary cannot afford to keep purchasing recent and relevant books out of my pocket. Our obstacle is that there are not many recent or relevant books found within our school. Many of our students, especially boys, dislike reading because they feel that nothing relates to them. I agree.

So I've decided to complete a literature circle unit where groups of students will meet weekly and discuss a recent book that they are reading. A book that is relevant to their lives. The resources I need are three sets of books (Crash, Stargirl, and Pictures of Hollis Woods). I also would like an audiotape of each book, so that my low readers and non readers will also be able to participate in our brilliant and thought provoking discussions. This project will inspire a foster a love of reading for years to come.

Your help will ensure that my students will have the opportunity to be exposed to recent young adult literature that they can relate to. It's imperative that these children realize that there are books that will interest them.
