You can help me to fertilize the future! This is the beginning of my third year of teaching first grade. My school is the home to the largest number of primary-aged students in the state of Kentucky. We have 1,000 students from pre-school to third grade all in one building! Even though we enjoy our size most of the time, it often creates problems for us, as we are located in a high-need community and we just usually don't have the funds that we need to support these needy children as we would like. The average combined household income is only about $30,000 and the percentage of students who receive free or reduced lunch is very high at our school.

In my classroom, I have 22 seeds of genius that are bursting with knowledge and energy that need some place comfortable and nourishing to plant themselves; somewhere they can share, work, celebrate, learn, and grow together, creating a safe, collaborative learning community. As the gardener, I just need some well-fertilized soil to provide support them and help them meet their needs. However, there is a problem. Much less impressively, in my classroom I also have one small, hand-me-down carpet that I have been using for the past two years for “group time.” This is used for most whole-group instruction and also for lots of small-group and center activities. It was actually never even high-quality to begin with. Needless to say, it is worn, unraveled, and as sad as it may sound, I would almost rather have the kids sit on the cold tile than in its' filth.

A large, comfortable, and interactive carpet would provide the support that this young crop of learners needs. It will provide each child the personal space they will need to develop independently but at the same time give an area where they will get support and assistance from peers allowing them the opportunity to learn from and enrich the learning of others. This will be a place where each child’s uniqueness will be celebrated and appreciated while there will also be a sense of security where taking chances and “thinking outside the box” is not only acceptable but encouraged.

This carpet will help to create and support a positive, collaborative, learning environment. This environment will equip the students with skills necessary for them to be effective and contributing members of society. After all, they are our future.
